A note from the Publisher

I am a Beijing native who, by a stroke of fate, studied Slovak at Beijing Foreign Studies University and later earned my Master's and Doctorate in Slovak Language and Literature in Slovakia. During four years of working in Taiwan, I translated eighteen children's books between Slovak and Chinese and helped bring them to publication on both sides. I also wrote and published my own books for children in Taiwan.

This deep bond with children's literature followed me back to Austria, where I continue to do what I love — translating, publishing, and finding good stories a new home.

The celebrated Slovak writer Milan Rúfus once said: "Children's books not only accompany little ones into their dreams — they can also wake us grown-ups from ours."

I hope to spend a lifetime in their company.

Altenburg Press — Building a Cultural Bridge in Children's Books Between Asia and Europe

Founded in August 2020 and registered in Austria, Altenburg Press officially became a member of the Hauptverband des Österreichischen Buchhandels (HVB) on 1 January 2021, marking its entry into the heart of the Central European publishing industry.

We are a young publishing house with a clear and meaningful mission: to bring high‑quality original children's books from Asia to the Central European market — namely Slovakia, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Germany. We believe that a good children's book does more than spark imagination; it offers a window into a country's culture, its daily life, and its values. Through captivating stories and evocative illustrations, we aim to fill a long‑standing gap in the Central European book market — the near absence of Asian children's literature — while introducing young readers here to the richness and diversity of Asia. At the same time, we strive to give Asian creators and storytellers the visibility they deserve in Europe.

We began our journey with original Taiwanese children's books, not only as a tribute to the quality of Chinese‑language picture books, but also as a concrete first step in our commitment to "starting from Asia."

Altenburg Press is built on two core strengths. First, we are deeply rooted in Austria: our publisher is fluent in Slovak, and we have a dedicated in‑house team of professional translators and experienced language and picture editors based locally, ensuring that every title we bring in is carefully adapted to the linguistic and visual expectations of Central European readers. Second, for every Asian children's book we acquire, we are able to publish both a German edition (for the Austrian and German markets) and a Slovak edition (for the Slovak and Czech markets) simultaneously. This allows each book to launch in four EU countries at the same time, reaching a combined potential readership of over 100 million people — 83 million in Germany, 8.8 million in Austria, 5.4 million in Slovakia, and 10.6 million in the Czech Republic.

At Altenburg Press, we see ourselves as more than just book producers — we are cultural interpreters. With every story that crosses the Alps, we hope to plant a seed of curiosity in the hearts of young European readers, inspiring them to look beyond the horizon and discover a world of wonder.

We hope our books are the start of a friendship — together, let's add a little more beauty to the world.
